Lilac could they be grown in a big?
Well, GREAT question, and the answer is yes, you can grow them in BIG pots.

However, Lilacs are %26#039;trees%26#039; and trees can also be grown in SMALLER POTS and even very small pots. We have lilac that are in pots as small as 6%26quot; and the trees grow very well, we treat them as BONSAI. %26quot;Bonsai%26quot; literally means %26quot;tree in a pot%26quot;. Remember that trees are OUTSIDE plants.

Keep in mind that you have to give them new, healthy soil (repot) every three or four years if the pots are small, water them REGULARLY without drowning them, watch for insects, and it helps to cut off the suckers that grow from the roots, otherwise you%26#039;ll get a lilac %26#039;forest%26#039; which is cute enough also, if you treat each sucker as an individual tree, and prune it that way.

Your lilacs will benefit from careful pruning, cut off any dead branches and very early in the spring, cut off the OLD blossom stems back to the base.

If you want a very decorative unusual-looking lilac, in the EARLY spring or very late fall prune your lilac back to the nearest CROOKED joint and let it grow a different direction, in a few years you%26#039;ll have a beautiful, gnarly-looking very aged %26#039;tree%26#039;.....in the pot. The branch will GROW in the direction the bud is aiming, so you can %26#039;plan%26#039; it.

Best part--have fun.
Reply:It needs to be planted in the ground as soon as possible! Lilacs are shrubs that spread from the roots. Keeping it in a pot will cause it to die from strangulation eventually as it will outgrow the pot.
Reply:There is no reason lilac cannot be grown in a pot...keep it pruned after blooming, do not prune again until after it blooms the following year...blooms from growing tips. You will have a %26#039;bonsai%26#039; lilac. Have fun.
