Lilac bushes?

I planted a few small lilac bushes today, but the leaves on them were all dried up. I%26#039;ve never planted them before, so I%26#039;m just wondering if new leaves will grow or if I%26#039;ll need to wait until next year. Or maybe it%26#039;s just too early in the season?

Here are some guidelines for planting lilacs. If the leaves were all dried up, they may be too severely damaged to survive. Always water your plants the minute you get home with them. If you can%26#039;t plant them immediately, place the container out of the direct sun and keep the soil moist. Plant as soon as possible.





Here%26#039;s the first rule of planting: lilacs need lots of space to grow. If you%26#039;re planting a hedge, they%26#039;ll need a spot at least seven to eight feet wide and ten feet wide for a shrub.





They also need at least six hours of sun a day to have excellent flowering. Provide a well-drained, alkaline soil. When planting, add a handful of lime with subsequent twice-a-year applications to keep the shrubs in peak condition.





To plant, dig a hole about as deep as the pot is or even a little deeper so you can add some compost to the hole. Take the lilac out of the pot and score the roots to get them ready to spread out in their new home. Put it in place and back fill the hole. For one more shot of nutrients, add a bit more compost on the soil surface. Water thoroughly. Once the shrub is established, let nature take over the watering duties; most lilacs are drought-resistant.
Reply:Did you happen to water them in when you planted them? They may be killed if you%26#039;ve let the drought get too severe. When you plant virtually anything...its always best to water it in. Dig a hole slightly bigger then the plant water the hole with or without the plant in it then back fill as needed when the plant is set at the proper depth within the hole...top of plant root ball even with the ground level unless you%26#039;re planting in poorly draining soils then its OK to plant a little higher then ground level. Good Luck and I hope they are still alive for you..Lilac are very nice and aromatic.
Reply:plant in sunny spot,water at night ,but not to much. DO NOT plant on Sunday they will die!! After 2 weeks being planted forget they are there and only water twice a month,except in drought.
