Lilac Bush?

When is the best time to prune back and shape my lilac bush? I live in the VA/NC area. I%26#039;ve heard October or March, but I honestly think it%26#039;s too warm to do it this month.

Reply:Hi:

Lilac Bushes should be pruned back in fall. They can be also pruned in early spring, but fall is the best time. Wait until the weather cools down some. Once the temperatures drop make sure you properly prune the bush so you will have it full next year.

You can also put a six month nitrogen slow release fertilizer down in fall. You can also do it again in spring.

Take a look at my webpage on properly pruning and get some tips. I will direct you to my site map also for any other information you made need on the Lilac Bush or any other landscape need. Good luck to you and if you need further help, please feel free to contact me. Have a great day!
