I have a lilac tree %26amp; need to remove it--has anyone done this? If you have, please provide specific instructions.

This problem depends on if you want to relocate it or just get rid of it. Either way you have to dig up the root ball, carefully if you want to keep it alive or brutally if you just want to get rid of it. Also if you want to just get rid of it check with you neighbors to see if anyone wants it for their yards.
